Rhododendron molle seeds

Rhododendron soft Japanese (Japanese soft azalea) / Rhododendron molle subsp. japonicum - a popular ornamental deciduous shrub, a subspecies of the Soft Rhododendron. Found in nature in Japan, among trees and on mountain slopes.  

The shrub is deciduous, 1–2 m tall, up to 1.2 m in diameter. Crown is densely branched, spreading. Growth rate is moderate, annual increment about 7–9 cm. Leaves are thin, oblong-lanceolate, 4–10 cm long and 2–4 cm wide, green, pubescent. Lifespan about 40 years.  

Flowers are broadly funnel-shaped, velvety outside, orange-red, salmon-red, cream-red, or brick-red, gathered in clusters of 6–12. They bloom before the leaves appear or together with them. Flowering lasts more than a month, from early June to mid-July. Begins flowering at 4 years of age.  

Prefers slightly acidic or neutral soils. Recommended to be planted in sunny locations. Winter hardiness above average, tolerates temperatures down to –26 °C.  

Uses: in solitary and group plantings in gardens and parks, for creating various landscape compositions.  

Propagation by seed:  

• Soil composition: loose, acidic, well-aerated substrate with peat as a mandatory component.  
• Optimal pH: 4.0–5.5 (up to 5.8 possible).  
• Best sowing time in greenhouse: November–December at 18–24 °C. Early sowing extends the growth period, allowing seedlings to develop better.  
• Seeds are very small and require light for germination, so sow without burying, scatter on the surface, cover with glass.  
• After most seeds germinate, remove the glass and move containers to a cooler place (15–17 °C) for hardening and better development.  

Care:  

Maintain optimal moisture. Avoid overwatering, as it can cause infection leading to seedling death. Water carefully in the morning with a sprayer or fine watering can.  

This shrub is valued for its long-lasting, brightly colored flowers and decorative crown.
