Nordmann fir or Caucasian fir / Abies Nordmanniana

Tall, evergreen coniferous tree with a pyramidal lush crown and tiered, slightly raised, horizontally arranged branches. It retains needles for a long time, therefore it is one of the most popular conifers for Christmas and New Year holidays.

The root system is superficial with a poorly developed tap root. The crown is densely branched from the ground itself, broadly cone-shaped with a pointed top, which becomes dull with age.

At a young age, it grows rapidly, more than 30 cm per year, later growth slows down. At 10 years old, the height is 4.5-5 m, at 30 years old it is about 15 m with a crown width of 6-7 m. The needles are dense, flattened, fragrant, up to 40 mm long and 2-2.5 mm wide, glossy on top, dark - green in color with two white stomatal stripes on the underside. Usually has a rounded or notched tip, on young trees it can be pointed.

The fruits are large, vertically growing, reddish-brown cylindrical cones, 15-20 cm long and 4-5 cm in diameter. When ripe, they break apart, releasing seeds with a wedge-shaped yellow-brown wing.

Growing Requirements: A hardy, shade tolerant plant that can grow even in poor soils. For optimum growth and development, fresh, fertile, acidic soils that are well-drained and well-hydrated are best suited. Prefers sunny or slightly shaded areas.

Planting Recommendations: For fir, it is recommended to choose well-ventilated sunny areas. An elevated position is best. The hole is prepared in advance. Before planting, sand, peat are added to the soil, lime can be added in small quantities (to adjust acidity). The depth of the planting pit is 0.5 meters, the diameter depends on the level of development of the root system.

Care: Sanitary pruning of branches is carried out every spring. Fir is in dire need of high humidity, so young seedlings are often sprayed. Fertilizers are applied every season, the tree is watered as the soil dries.
Features: Abies nordmanniana is an excellent phytoncide. The fragrance purifies the air of car gases, toxins and pathogens.
