Niedzwetzky's apple seeds

Niedzwetzky's apple tree / Malus niedzwetzkyana - this beautiful and rare apple tree is listed in the Red Book as an endangered species. An ornamental form of an apple tree, recommended for the widest possible use, especially good in colorful compositions and a single planting in a lawn, and even as a hedge. Planting an unpretentious and stable apple tree will decorate the boundaries of the site with an original hedge.

A tree 3-6 m tall, well amenable to shearing, can also be used to form various living figures. Nedzwiecki's apple tree is very beautiful during flowering - the trees are densely covered with red buds, which open with very beautiful flowers of bright purple color, and in autumn, when the leaves fall, it is strewn with tiny (2 cm in diameter) bright red apples.

Ornamental apple trees are resistant to frost and drought, endure dust, gas pollution and soil salinity. The tree requires thinning and rejuvenating pruning. The French gardener L. Tillier believed that this apple tree, from a decorative point of view, has no equal in European horticulture.

A small tree, up to 8 m tall, with smooth branches without thorns, young shoots are dark purple. Leaves: during the blooming period, also purple, with full leafing, only the petioles remain intensely colored, the plate is dark green above, purple below, pubescent.

This makes the color of the crown very peculiar. Flowers: dark purple in buds, intense pink or purple when blooming, on thin, white-tomentose peduncles, which distinguishes it from the general mass of flowering apple trees. The fruits are small, solitary, up to 2 cm, slightly spherical, with a wax coating, violet-purple, with pink-purple flesh.

Location: photophilous and requires fertile, fresh soils. Does not tolerate waterlogged and excessively dry soils. Ground water should be no closer than 2.5 m from the surface. Apple trees grow rapidly from the third year of life.

Reproduction: by sowing seeds, in early autumn - freshly harvested, late - after one and a half to two months of stratification, with spring sowing - stratification from December to sowing with removal at the end of the stratification period under the snow. Rare species, decorative forms and varieties are propagated by grafting.

Requirements: unpretentious. Resistant to pests and diseases. Grows relatively fast. Recommended for the widest use, especially good in colorful compositions and single planting on the lawn. The Nedzvedsky apple tree has exceptional winter hardiness and does not require shelter for the winter.
