Ivy gourd, scarlet gourd, tindora and kowai fruit / Coccinia grandis

This is a flowering, evergreen ivy with beautiful and tasty fruits. Coccinia is a perennial plant of the gourd family, which is why it is also called ivy gourd, but the fruits look more like cucumbers, lives and grows up to 50 years.

It grows very quickly, begins to bloom and bear fruit in the second year. Liana grows from 3.5 to 5 meters per season.

At home, you can form as a bonsai. In open ground, it is desirable to grow as a tub culture. For the winter it is necessary to bring in a warm place. In winter, watering is moderate. From spring to autumn, watering is plentiful (every two weeks before fruiting it is necessary to apply fertilizer for flowering plants).

Almost all parts of the plant are edible. Ripe fruits are eaten fresh. Green fruits can also be consumed raw, added to salads, stewing.

Young shoots and leaves are used as greens for salads and added to soups, stews.

During flowering and fruiting, it looks very impressive. Against the background of dark carved foliage, white flowers stand out brightly. And then green fruits appear, which, when ripe, turn bright red.

The fruits are sweet, taste like a banana + melon + strawberries. Ripe fruits make a delicious jam.
