There are several main reasons why cats should be allowed to eat grass:

  • cleansing the stomach of wool;
  • vitamins and microelements;
  • an alternative to indoor plants.

Why do cats eat grass?

Scientists have differing opinions on this issue. There are several theories. Let's take a closer look at each of them:

The cat eats grass to induce vomiting.

This is the first and most popular theory. By inducing vomiting by eating grass, the cat cleanses its stomach. Along with the grass, the remains of undigested food and other items that the animal ate by mistake come out.

Proponents of this theory argue that cats are predatory animals. In the wild, they feed on mice and birds. Bones and feathers are difficult to digest. But here a contradiction of facts arises, since domestic cats rarely get food on their own and eat ready-made food, which is perfectly digested and absorbed. Perhaps instinctive programs are “triggered” in animals, which, regardless of the quality of food, awaken in cats a desire to eat grass.

The cat eats grass to get rid of hairballs.

This is the second theory of scientists. By licking itself, a lot of hair gets into the cat's intestines, where it accumulates in the form of lumps. To get rid of hairballs, cats eat grass, causing them to vomit.

This theory cannot be applied to all cats, since many do not vomit after eating grass, but they still successfully get rid of excess accumulated hair.

The cat eats grass to replenish its vitamin reserves.

Observing the cat's behavior, scientists have another theory. Cats can sit on the lawn for a long time, nibble the tops of blades of grass, and then simply chew it and spit it out. They do this to replenish missing supplies of vitamins and folic acid.

Growing grass for cats from seeds

There are many options for growing grass for cats; we will describe the two main ones in detail.

The first way to grow greens for a cat:

First you need to buy vermiculite. Vermiculite is capable of absorbing up to 500% of its weight in moisture. This will eliminate the problem of soil acidification and constant watering. Grass grows well in such soil. When the soil is purchased, it is necessary to soak the grain.

Take part of the seed packet, for example 1/3, and soak it in cold water along with vermiculite for one hour. Then drain the water and pour the contents into the pan. To prevent the soil from spilling out, the container must be filled halfway.

Next you should make a greenhouse. To do this, wrap the container in cellophane and place it in a warm place for a couple of days. The first shoots should appear soon. This type of planting is good because the grains in the soil are at different depths, therefore they will not germinate at the same time. Typically, one “serving” of grass (about 1/3 of a bag) grown in this way lasts for 7-10 days.

On the 6-7th day after planting, you can already treat your cat to grass. To care for your lawn, you need to fill the container with water every 5-6 days, and drain the excess after 10 minutes.

The second way to grow grass for cats:

The essence of this method is to grow grass for a cat without any soil or soil in a plastic plate. To begin, select a suitable container and make holes in it with a nail or awl.

The grain must be soaked, as in the first method. Then pour into a plate and cover with gauze. Next, organize a greenhouse for the contents. The first roots will appear in a couple of days.

Next, you need to pour everything onto a plate with gauze twisted in several layers and pour over it. The plate should be placed in a warm place. In 3-4 days the first tops will appear. Wait another week, after which you can call the cat. The grass dies within a week, so this method can be called a one-time method - less practical.

It is worth noting that bringing grass from the street or growing it in soil that you collected in a flower bed is dangerous. A cat can become infected with worms, distemper and other dangerous diseases.

Therefore, if you decide to grow grass for your pet in the ground, buy universal soil (soil) at a flower shop, although any other will do.
