Albert's exochorda or Exochorda albertii - is an ornamental shrub; in our climatic conditions, plants begin to bloom in the second half of May. Flowering continues for three weeks. The fruits are spherical or pear-shaped fused leaflets. And the name comes from two Greek words: “exo” - external and “chorde” - string, ligament - for the fibers covering the placenta.

A strongly branched shrub with bright green, elliptical leaves up to 7 cm long. The flowers are white, up to 4 cm in diameter, in multi-flowered apical inflorescences 8 cm long. The fruit is a spherical-ovoid capsule, 1.5 cm long, on a short stalk.

Growing Albert's exochord

All exochords are photophilous. They can grow in the shade, but will bloom much more modestly. In open sun, it is better to mulch the soil to prevent the roots from overheating. The plants are drought-resistant and respond well to watering. They are undemanding to soil, but grow better in well-drained areas. It is advisable to lime acidic soils.

The exochord requires trimming. Flowering branches must be shortened immediately after flowering so that the bush does not waste energy on producing seeds. This stimulates the growth of new shoots that will bloom the following year. You also need to remove weak and thickening shoots.

The exochord is propagated by seeds, cuttings and layering. Seeds are sown before winter in pots or in pre-prepared beds. At exhibitions you can buy plants in containers. In appearance, the seedlings are similar to bird cherry or mock orange.

The exochord amazes with its beauty, but it must be planted “with honor.” Find a bright place and loosen the soil well. Add humus to the hole. Mulch the soil with compost. Water regularly during the summer.

Starting from mid-summer, nitrogen should be excluded from fertilizing, then the plant will easily survive the winter and will enjoy lush flowering in the spring. With this care, the exochord will turn into a luxurious bush. This is a real pride for the owner and a surprise for all the neighbors.
