Pokeweed  or American pokeweed, poke sallet, dragonberries, and inkberry / Phytolacca americana

Perennial herbaceous plant; species of the genus pokeweed of the family Phytolaccaceae.

Herbaceous perennial up to 3 m high with a multi-headed rhizome and a thick taproot. The leaves are large green, simple, opposite, ovate, entire. The flowers are small white, collected in racemose inflorescences (up to 30 cm long) at the ends of the shoots. The fruit is a purple-black berry. Roots and shoots are poisonous. Alkaloids, essential oil were found in the roots, triterpene saponins were found in the roots and leaves. Green young shoots are used for food purposes like asparagus.

In the Abkhazian cuisine, the berry is used for pickling cucumbers, cabbage, hot peppers and garlic, as a kind of spice that gives astringency and spice, gives the products a pink-purple color. In the wine-growing regions of Europe and Asia, the American pokeweed is grown for its berries, which give color to wine.

Growing lakonos is not particularly difficult, and is comparable to growing ordinary legumes for all of us.

Lakonos develops very rapidly, and in a few weeks can reach a height of 1 meter. Therefore, one must not miss the moment when the dive procedure should be performed on the flower bed. Usually it is done when the height of young plants is no more than 10 cm. They are carefully dug up and placed in a flower bed so that the distance between each flower is at least 90-100 cm, even if it seems to you. that this is too much, in a few weeks you will radically change this opinion, as you will be convinced that lacones are able to fill all the free space with themselves.

These flowers have many advantages, and if they settled in your backyard, but in early spring you can get young shoots not only thanks to the seeds, but also by dividing the bushes. These flowers are not annuals, so after the snow has melted, you can carefully dig out the tubers of the flower and separate from them the new shoots that formed in the fall. They are transplanted to a new place, watered abundantly, and after 10-12 days young lacones will give the first shoots.

This flower is very unpretentious and patient, so if you accidentally forgot about lacones, then nothing bad will happen. They tolerate drought well and feel comfortable both during the heat and during a sharp cold snap. Of course, if you regularly water these tropical flowers, and even feed them with organic fertilizers, then your flower bed will look perfect. But if this is not possible, then the laconos will perfectly provide themselves with everything they need thanks to a powerful and developed root system.

The only thing these plants need is regular weeding, as many weeds feel very at ease next to laconos. Which, fortunately, cannot be said about garden pests, which are repelled by the aroma of these exotic flowers, so if lacones grow on the site, then you are unlikely to have weevils or the Colorado potato beetle, for which this tropical guest poses a real threat.

For the winter, the stalks of pokeweed must be cut and dried, therefore this procedure is best performed in September. It is not necessary to cover the flowers with a film, as they feel great under the snow and in the spring they are among the first to throw dense, elastic leaves to the surface.

Pokeweed - use in folk medicine.

Infusion of pokeweed for the treatment of joints.

You will need:

• Chopped pokeweed leaves - 2 tablespoons;
• Water - 1 glass.

Cooking method:

• Pour the crushed leaves of pokeweed with warm boiled water.
• Close the lid tightly.
• We insist in a dark place for two weeks.

With the prepared tincture, rub the disturbing joints and back. You can also make compresses based on this tincture.
 
Pokeweed tincture for otitis media, laryngitis and tonsillitis.

• pokeweed rhizomes - 10 grams;
• Alcohol (90%) - 100 mm.

Cooking method:

• We fill the roots of laconos with alcohol.
• We insist in a dark place for 2 weeks.

We accept daily. The daily norm is 15 drops.
 
In addition to the fact that laconos tincture helps with otitis, sore throat and laryngitis, it also perfectly strengthens the immune system. Often, with the help of a tincture prepared according to the proposed recipe, they treat stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers, and kidneys.

You will need:

• Stems and leaves of pokeweed - 2 tablespoons;
• Water - 1 glass;
• Salt - a pinch.

Cooking method:

• Dilute a small amount of salt in warm boiled water.
• Fill the laconos with salted water.
• Boil for a few minutes. Let's cool down a bit.

With stomatitis and toothache, rinse your mouth with a prepared decoction every 2-4 hours.
