Paulownia tomentosa
Deciduous tree 15-20 m tall, with a large spreading, rounded or ovoid crown; large, wide leaves up to 20 cm long (in strongly growing even up to 50 cm), heart-shaped or ovoid, fluffy above, felted below, on long petioles. Leaves open late and fall late.
Large, up to 6 cm in diameter, pale purple, fragrant flowers are collected in terminal, paniculate inflorescences up to 30 cm long. Buds are laid at the end of summer, overwinter and bloom in the spring of next year, before or during the deployment of leaves.
Fruits - broadly ovoid capsules with numerous winged seeds remain on the tree throughout the winter. At the time of fruiting comes at 4-5 years of age.
Quite hardy, sap flow begins early, therefore it can suffer from late frosts, old specimens with lignified wood endure frosts down to -28 ° C. Heat-loving, requires a protected location, resistant to urban conditions, endures periods of summer drought, smoke-gas resistant.
It usually propagates by root suckers and seeds. Can be propagated by root offspring and green cuttings. Soil: Undemanding, grows well in all not too poor soils, prefers dry, fresh, well-drained soils, slightly acidic to strongly alkaline. On too fertile, deep, moist soils, wood does not ripen well.
