Black fruit wolfberry, siyah goji, black goji berry and kaokee / Lycium ruthenicum

Shrub 20-150 cm high with multiple thorns. It forms many branches with stiff branches, often curved, white. Leaves are formed on hard branches, in groups of 2-6, fleshy, compressed and ribbon-shaped, lanceolate or cylindrical, 5-30 mm long, obtuse and rounded.

They are located only around the stem of the flowers, with 1-2 minute spikes, 5-10 mm long, appearing on both sides of the base of the leaves. The flowers are hermaphroditic (have both male and female organs) and are fertilized by bees and insects. Calyx narrow tubular, 3-4 mm long, lobed with 2-4 lobes. The inflorescence is a funnel-shaped or tubular shape with lobes 2-3 times larger, purple in color and 1 cm long. The stamens are uneven in length.

The berries are spherical, dark purple until fully ripe, 4-9 mm in diameter. Seeds are kidney-shaped, brown. Flowering time varies from June to August, but sometimes it can bloom in May. The fruits bear fruit from August to October.

The plants are very drought tolerant and have an extensive root system. They can be planted to stabilize embankments and on sandy soils. Plants require well-drained soil of medium quality for best flowering and fruiting, as well as to survive in poor saline soils and in a sunny position.

L. ruthenicum can be propagated by seeds, cuttings, fissile granules, and cataboles. For better and faster vegetation, the seeds are sown in the greenhouse in early spring, and the seedlings are transplanted into separate pots and grown in the greenhouse during the first winter. They are planted in the field in late spring or early summer. To stimulate the shrubby vegetation, we pinch the tips of the shoots of the young plant.

It can also be reproduced with shoots of semi-mature or mature wood 5-10 cm high in a cold frame to achieve a high propagation rate. They propagate easily by dividing offshoots and planting them in permanent positions at the end of winter. L. ruthenicum is widely cultivated in Ningxia, China.

It's amazing to know that China alone produces over five million kilos of dried Lycium fruit a year, and most of it is for home use. They also harvest fresh fruits and grind them for their juice, which is stored in a concentrated form to produce various drinks.

Ripe fruits are eaten raw or boiled. Only fully ripe fruit should be eaten.

In India, it is grown in Kashmir and used by the locals as an ointment to treat camel blindness. In humans, the ripe fruit has traditionally been used to treat heart disease, menstrual irregularities, and menopause. Fruits can be used immediately to make an infusion by simply immersing them in warm water for a few minutes.

The fruits are rich in carotenoids, proteins, polysaccharides, amino acids, vitamins B1, B2, vitamin C, minerals, trace elements such as iron, zinc and selenium, alkaline and beta minerals. Used to treat diabetes, anemia, vision problems, impotence, lung diseases, it can improve liver and kidney functions and strengthen the immune system to prevent cancer and AIDS.

This lesser known but valuable medicinal plant is of paramount importance in the traditional medical system and is also an excellent scientific certification. The identification of its new bioactive ingredients is essential for the preparation of herbal preparations from this plant.

Useful properties of black goji berries:

  • all the properties that an ordinary red goji berry has;

  • prevention and treatment of diabetes mellitus;
  • antibacterial properties;
  • used in the treatment of eye diseases (eye fatigue, cataracts, myopia, dry eyes);
  • strong antioxidant;
  • used in weight loss diets.

It is even believed that black goji berries have even greater power and effect than red goji. Therefore, it is important to check the reaction of the body with a small dosage during the initial use. It is also necessary to consume by adding to food, tea, subsequently eating the berries themselves. Used to prevent cancer, atherosclerosis, heart disease and other ailments, as well as to rejuvenate the body.
