The stems of this herbaceous perennial with graceful foliage reach 1.5 m in height, are unstable and require a light garter. The tap root system penetrates the soil to a depth of more than 50 cm. From the end of May, for two weeks or more, the ends of the stems are strewn with many weakly fragrant open white flowers, collected in huge loose paniculate inflorescences. If immediately after flowering the stems are cut, in August the bush blooms again.
Clematis direct is undemanding to the soil, but grows better on slightly acidic. Blooms profusely both in the shade and in the open. By the end of the season, the stems die off, the bush hibernates without shelter.
