Calabash (Gourd) «Tobacco Box» / Lagenaria siceraria
Decorative lagenaria with a beautiful and hard shell. The fruits have an average diameter of 25 cm, a beautiful round shape and a flat bottom. The thick shell is suitable for woodcarving.
Can be used to store tobacco, beads, knick-knacks, dried legumes, curdled milk and medicinal herbs. The shape is slightly convex, thick-walled.
Grows best on a trellis, which promotes symmetrical fruit, prevents rot and can speed up ripening. Unripe pumpkins are not cured. When the pumpkins reach full size, you can twist the stem and leave them hanging. This contributes to the early ripening of fruits.
Harvest after the first frost and hang outdoors where they can slowly dry out. Wipe down mildew from time to time as it forms on the surface. This will make a pumpkin with a distinct skin color.
Also known as bottle gourd, white-flowered gourd, long melon, birdhouse gourd, New Guinea bean, New Guinea butter bean, Tasmania bean, and opo squash.
