Wild cucumber, prickly cucumber or bur cucumber / Echinocystis lobata

An annual ornamental climbing plant of the Cucurbitaceae family. Echinocystis was loved not only for its unpretentiousness, but also for its decorative qualities, ideal for vertical gardening. In addition, the stunning scent of thorny flowers attracts pollinating insects and creates a cozy summer atmosphere on the site.

Echinocystis sets unusual fruits: gray-green, round or oval, covered with long soft spikes. It is because of these fruits that Echinocystis was nicknamed the «mad cucumber». At the time of seed ripening, the fruit seems to spit them out of the seed chambers. Seeds winter well in our climate, so they can be sown in autumn, and when grown annually, Echinocystis reproduces well by «self-sowing».

Prefers a sunny place, can tolerate semi-shaded, shaded. Not picky about the soil, grows well on any soil. On fertile - can cover with greenery up to 8 m2. Needs support. During prolonged drought, watering is necessary.

Seeds are best sown before winter after 80 - 100 cm, two or three pieces in the nest, and when three or four true leaves appear, one seedling is left.
