Giant sequoia, giant redwood or Sierra redwood / Sequoiadendron giganteum - the only modern species of the Sequoiadendron tree genus, Cypress family. A coniferous evergreen tree that reaches 100 meters or more in height in its homeland in North America. In Ukraine it reaches a height of more than 20 meters. The needles are small, alternately arranged. The cones are hanging, green-brown. The plant is decorative all year round.
Frost resistance zone: 6a (-30) - the plant is frost-resistant in the South and West of Ukraine, and is successfully grown in Lviv. Young seedlings need shelter in the first 1-2 winters after planting. Frost resistance of adult plants is much higher than that of young seedlings.
Grows best in full sun, but can grow in partial shade.
Prefers loamy, sandy loam, nutritious soil, with an admixture of coniferous deciduous soil. Prefers regular hydration without prolonged stagnation of moisture, especially in the cold season. Does not tolerate soil drying out well. pH 5.5 - 7.5
It is actively used for planting in parks, gardens and urban infrastructure, large landscape compositions.
