Cherry laurel, common laurel and sometimes English laurel / Prunus laurocerasus - an evergreen dense shrub reaching a height of 1 m and 150 cm in diameter, the annual growth is approx. 15 cm. The leaves are dark green, shiny, leathery, narrow and long (approx. 11 cm). The flowers are white, collected in spikes. Blooms in May.
The leaves of the plant have a calming and analgesic effect. The crop also has fruits that are almost never used fresh. They are used to make wine or soft drinks.
The fruit is a round-ovoid black monodrupe about 8 mm long with juicy pulp and a smooth stone, bears fruit in July - August. The fruit is edible, the seeds are poisonous.
Widely used in hedges and also in mass planting on slopes to strengthen the soil. Needs warm and sheltered, sunny or semi-shaded places and fertile soil. It needs to be protected for the winter.
