Spanish fir / Abies pinsapo (green form) - this is an evergreen coniferous tree originating from southern Spain. It is distinguished by its stiff, short needles arranged radially or spirally around the branches, giving the plant an unusual and highly decorative appearance. The needle color varies from dark green to grey-green, while ornamental forms can also have blue, silvery, or golden shades.
The tree prefers sunny locations and fertile, well-drained soils. In temperate climates it grows successfully, but young plants are sensitive to severe frost and therefore require protection during cold winters.
The needles are short — only 1–2 cm long — stiff and thick, with blunt or pointed tips. They are evenly distributed in all directions, which makes the crown especially dense and decorative.
The crown is broadly conical, with horizontal branches arranged in tiers along the trunk. The cones are cylindrical, up to 20 cm long, and stand upright, decorating the tree during the ripening period.
The bark of young trees is smooth and grey, while in older specimens it becomes rough and fissured, giving the tree a majestic, aged appearance.
Spanish fir is widely used in ornamental landscaping due to its unusual foliage and dense crown. It is planted in parks, gardens, and private landscapes as a specimen tree or in compositions with other conifers. Particularly valued are ornamental cultivars with blue, silver, or golden needles, which create striking accents in landscape design. In Europe, Abies pinsapo is also used for hedges and avenues, and in some regions it is grown as a Christmas tree.
