Annual herbaceous plant 15-30 cm high; rough due to short hairs. The stem is leafy, branched, erect or prostrate, in the axils of the lower leaves there are shortened branches in the form of a bunch of leaves. The leaves are opposite, narrowly linear, usually entire, without petioles. The flowers are small, inconspicuous, bisexual, collected in dense spike-shaped inflorescences (from spherical to oblong), located in umbrellas at the tops of stems and branches. The corolla is dry, membranous, whitish, with a four-part limb.
The fruit is a two-celled capsule that opens with a lid. Seeds are dark brown, shiny, oval, furrowed on the inner side. Plantain blooms in June-July. It grows on sands (roadsides of country and forest roads, sandy river banks, forest clearings in forests, wastelands, pastures, etc.).
Plantain seeds are harvested by cutting off the tops of plants during the fruiting period. After drying, they are threshed, sieved through a sieve. The color of the seeds is dark brown, the taste is slimy, there is no smell. The seeds contain mucus, fatty oil, protein substances, they are used as a mild laxative for constipation, as well as an enveloping agent for chronic colitis.

With the help of medicines prepared from plantain, many human diseases are treated.
