Yew common, also Yew berry / Taxus baccata
is a species of trees of the genus Yew of the Yew family (Taxaceae). Height 10-20 meters, in some cases up to 28 meters. It grows relatively slowly, but it has a long lifespan. The maximum recorded trunk diameter of 4 meters was reached in 4000 years.
The crown of the yew berry, as a rule, is ovoid, dense. Shoots grow vertically, very densely. The needles are shiny on top, have a color from light to dark green. It bears red fruits every year.
You can plant yew berry both in the sun and in the shade. The soil should be moist, clayey, moderately fertile. During snowless winters in colder regions, additional protection may be needed. It tolerates aggressive urban environment well. Pruning and shaping will help maintain lushness and encourage new growth.
Berry yew is planted as a tapeworm and in compositions (on the lower tiers) with other coniferous and deciduous crops. Often planted to form hedges. Also a very popular use of yews is garden sculptures and topiaries.
In terms of shade tolerance, they rank first among tree species. They also develop well in lighted places, they love moist air and fresh, lime-containing soils. It should be borne in mind - all parts of the plant are POISONOUS! and only the seedling is harmless.
