Giant arborvitae, common name is western redcedar in the U.S. or western red cedar in the UK, and it is also called pacific red cedar, western arborvitae, just cedar, giant cedar, or shinglewood / Thuja plicata - is the largest tree of its kind, which under good growing conditions can reach more than 50 m, with a trunk diameter of 2.5 m. It has wide shoots with bright green and yellow tips.
The heat-loving plant freezes slightly in harsh winter conditions and can dry out at very low temperatures. An adult tree has a thick, dense crown; its lower branches hang down to the ground under their own weight. The scale-like needles are arranged crosswise.
In general, thuja has a pyramidal appearance. It quite often grows along the banks of reservoirs, rivers and swamps, and loves damp places.
