Barberry «Juliana» - is an evergreen species of barberry from the Barberry family (Berberidaceae). Native to Central China (Guangxi, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, and Sichuan). It rises into the mountains to a height of 1000-1500 m above sea level. In culture since 1900. It was first described in 1984 by botanist W. Kent.

The shape of the crown is straightened with a very dense, densely branched, almost spherical crown; with age, the branches hang down in an arched manner. The height of an adult plant is 3 m, width is 4 m. The leaves are ovate, leathery, with teeth along the edges, dark green, pale green on the underside. Yellow flowers, collected in bunches, appear in May. The fruits are elliptical 0,6-0,9 cm in length, blue-black, covered with a dense bluish waxy coating, not edible. The column is short. They ripen at the end of September. oval, black with a bluish coating. The shoots are ribbed, bare, the spines are powerful, tripartite, up to 4 cm in length.

Barberry «Juliana» is very decorative and is used in single or group plantings against the background of a lawn, near trees, in the form of borders and hedges. Barberries tolerate cutting very well, after which they keep their given shape for a long time. Suitable for urban plantings. Planted in places protected from the wind.

Care instructions:

Winter-hardy, drought-resistant, not whimsical. Grows well in dry and sandy soil. Prefers acidic or slightly alkaline soil. Does not tolerate stagnant water. Light-loving, but shade-tolerant. Tolerates urban conditions well and is wind-resistant.

Planting is best done in spring or autumn. Planting mixture: peat, turf soil, humus, 400 grams of slaked lime and 200 grams of wood ash. Dimensions of the planting hole: 40x40 cm. When planting alone, the distance between plants should be 1,5-2 m.

Care consists of loosening the tree trunk circles, but not deeply, and mulching. It is recommended to water at least once a week, 2-3 buckets per plant. In the spring, a year after planting, you can apply nitrogen-containing fertilizers. In the future, fertilizing with nitrogen is carried out no earlier than after 3-4 years.
