Mountain knotgrass or Polpala, Pol-pala / Aerva lanata

A herbaceous plant of the Amaranth family, a species of the genus Erva, deserves the attention of gardeners and lovers of medicinal plants, since it has a wide range of medicinal properties. It is used for various kidney diseases, it is able to dissolve stones in the urinary tract. It has also been noted to lower blood pressure in some people.

In nature, this perennial, reaching a height of 140 centimeters, is grown as an annual. Half-pala seeds are very small, they should be sown only for seedlings, although it often sprouts and self-sows. It has a gray-white tap root with a few lateral branches. Root length up to 18 centimeters, diameter up to 7 millimeters.

The stems are green, strongly branched, can be both erect and creeping. Diameter up to 1 centimeter. The leaves are alternate, short-petiolate, elliptical or almost round in shape, entire, pubescent. The length of the leaves is up to 2 centimeters, the width is up to 1.5 centimeters.

The flowers are five-membered, small and inconspicuous, with a simple cream or whitish-green perianth, having a cover leaf at the base and two bracts. The flowers are collected in numerous spike-shaped inflorescences.
The fruit is round, small, box-shaped with an elongated spout.

Woolly erva herb contains indole alkaloids ervin, methylervin, ervozide, ervolanine, feruloylamides, phenolic acids, flavonoids: acylglycosides tiliroside, coumaroyl-tiliroside, ervitrin, narcissin, triterpenoids, pectin substances, lupeol and oleanoic acid derivatives.

It is used as a hypoazotemic and diuretic agent for diseases of the urinary system: pyelonephritis, cystitis, urethritis, urolithiasis, gout, spondylosis. Since the herb contains a high amount of potassium nitrate, this makes erva a potassium-sparing diuretic.

Seeds of woolly erva are sown in loose fertile soil in early May. Before sowing, the soil is lightly tamped and the seeds are sown on the surface, lightly sprayed with a spray bottle. After that, the box is covered with a film or glass and placed in the warmest possible place.

Every day it is necessary to spray so that the soil does not even slightly dry out. Shoots usually appear after 12 - 16 days. From this point on, it is necessary that the plants are only in a bright place. At first, seedlings grow slowly, and only after the appearance of 2-3 true leaves, growth begins to accelerate.

In the seedling stage - half a palu is not fed with anything, and they are planted in open ground no earlier than the beginning of June, i.e. after stable warm weather is established.

After transplanting for about two weeks, you should carefully monitor the soil moisture. If the humidity and temperature are optimal, the plants quickly take root and begin to grow well.

The first top dressing is carried out after 2 weeks with a dilute solution of urea (approximately a matchbox per bucket of water), and subsequent top dressing is carried out based on the condition of the plants. If they grow normally and look healthy, no fertilizer is needed.

Unlike many other plants, half-pala grows well in significant shading, it can be planted under trees with a not very dense crown (peaches, plums, cherries). It is very useful to mulch the soil around plants with fallen leaves, grass clippings, or any other similar material.

It is necessary to cut the already grown grass for medicinal raw materials in 3 steps, as the plants bloom. The first cut is carried out in June, at the beginning of flowering, after which the plants grow back, then, when they bloom again, they are cut again, and the third cut is carried out before frost.

It is possible to harvest the grass in one step in the fall in dry weather before the onset of cold weather, since half-palm blooms continuously until frost.

Plants are cut at the root and laid out on paper in the shade in a ventilated area. When the stems become brittle, the grass is stored in cardboard boxes for storage. When the grass dries, seeds are poured onto paper, which are collected in paper bags and stored separately - next year they can be used for self-sowing.

Those who want to grow woolly herva in their backyard should remember that this tropical plant needs high humidity, warmth and sunlight for full growth.

Pol-pala is a powerful diuretic, the peculiarity of which is that it (unlike many other diuretics) does not provoke severe dehydration. Simply put, half-palla has a very mild and absolutely safe effect on the body, which cannot be said about many modern drugs recognized by official medicine. In fairness, it should be noted that today the medicinal properties of this plant are recognized not only by folk, but also by traditional medicine. So, half-palat is used in the treatment of diseases of the liver, kidneys, bladder, stomach.

Preparations, which include this medicinal herb, relieve inflammatory processes localized in the urinary tract, kidneys and bladder. Ceylon healers recommend using half-pala preparations for people living in cities with high (or increased) levels of radiation and poor ecology, because this plant neutralizes the effects of free radicals and heavy metal salts, and removes toxins from the body.
