Dog rose / Rosa canina - a species of plants belonging to the genus Rosehip (lat. Rosa) of the Pink family, a deciduous shrub reaching a height of more than 1 m. The shoots are bare, thick, arcuately curved. The bark is green, reddening from the sunny side. The spines are sparse, crescent-shaped, with a very short base, laterally compressed. Their ends are directed downwards.
The leaves are small, glabrous, up to 4.5 cm in size, pinnate, with 5-7 serrated along the edge, ovate-elliptical leaflets. At the base of the leaf there is a narrow glandular-ciliated stipules. Flowers - odorless, solitary or collected 3-5 in apical corymbose inflorescence, from white to bright pink, reach a diameter of 5-8 cm. Sepals are pinnate, broadly lanceolate, fold back after flowering and fall off long before fruit ripening. Blooms in June-July.
Dog rose hips are used in folk medicine. Fruit tea is used for colds. Rosehip seeds are used to treat urinary tract stones, rheumatism and gout. Rose hips contain vitamin C. Syrup and marmalade are made from them. Dog rose is the most common stock for garden roses. Roses grafted onto it acquire its unpretentiousness, winter hardiness and significant disease resistance.
