Scotch thistle / Onopordum acanthium

It is a biennial herbaceous plant of the Asteraceae family. It has a spindle-shaped, fleshy root. Erect, branched at the top, cobweb-pubescent spiny stem up to 2 m high.

The leaves are alternate, large, prickly, oblong-ovate, oblong or lanceolate, pinnately lobed, grayish-cobweb on both sides. The flowers are small, tubular, bisexual, lilac-purple, collected in spherical inflorescences-baskets up to 4-5 cm, located singly or 2-3 at the tops of the stem and side branches. The prickly tartar blossoms in our conditions (Ukraine, Kyiv) from the end of June to September.

Unpretentious to soils. In the first year, a rosette is formed, it blooms in the second year of life. Landing should be done in early spring or late autumn. Seed consumption during sowing is approximately 5-7 kg per hectare. Plants are large, sprawling, therefore planting should be carried out according to the scheme 50X50 cm and no less. Nectar productivity strongly depends on the soil and its moisture content and, according to various sources, ranges from 150 to 500 kg per hectare. solid crops.

An infusion, decoction and powder from flower baskets and Tatarnik leaves are used. They are used for rheumatism, colds, bladder diseases (as a diuretic), coughs, bronchial asthma, palpitations, hemorrhoids, as well as in the treatment of malignant tumors, tetanus, festering wounds, ulcers, lupus and skin cancer.

A decoction of herb Tatarnik can be used for external treatment. A decoction of the herb Tartarnik prickly is recommended by folk medicine for uterine cancer, as well as for external malignant tumors (like Crimean Tatarnik).

Tatarnik relieves coughs, colds, asthma symptoms, cystitis and hemorrhoids. A decoction of the plant is used as a diuretic. Folk healers have long discovered that thistle increases heart rate, increases muscle tone and blood pressure.

A drug based on tartar is used not only inside, but also as an external agent, for example, lotions and compresses are made from it for skin diseases (purulent wounds and ulcers). Tatarnik is used to speed up the process of rehabilitation of patients who have undergone surgery to remove a malignant tumor.

Tartar infusion is treated for: rheumatism; eye diseases; lichen; boils; frostbite; burns.

How to use: 1 tablespoon of dried crushed flowers of the tartar must be poured with 1 glass of water, boil for 3-4 minutes, let the broth cool. Use the drug 1/2 cup 3-4 times a day.
