Chinese Metasequoia / Metasequoia glyptostroboides
The tree, at first slender, then has a cylindrical shape. It grows rapidly, reaching 12 m in height at the age of 30 years. The needles are soft, light green, turning yellow and brown in autumn, and then falling off along with small shoots. Requires moist (waterlogged) soil. Young plants can be damaged by frost.
It is recommended to plant in damp places (near ponds and streams) in large gardens and parks.
It has a pyramidal shape and is one of the three best known deciduous conifers in cultivation. Its leaves-needles are soft, short, flat, have a bright green color, perfectly contrasting with the reddish color of the branches and trunk bark. In autumn, before falling off, the needles change color to copper-golden. Metasequoia is a close relative of taxodium (taxodium distichum), and therefore also loves moist soil, some of the roots may even be in shallow water. Despite frost resistance, it is better to plant in a sunny warm place. Metasequoia grows up to 30 m in height, at 15 years old it can grow up to 10-15 m, so it is suitable for creating fast-growing walls or windbreaks.
