It's no secret that lettuce leaves, along with other vegetable crops grown in Ukraine, have useful micro and macro elements, as well as a vitamin complex. Therefore, every self-respecting gardener grows various varieties of salads in his summer cottage.
Lettuce seeds: types and features
Today, there are more than a thousand varieties and hybrids of lettuce, but all of them can be divided into 5 main varieties:
- leafy is a type of lettuce where a leafy rosette forms without a head; leafy varieties include: lollo rosso, lettuce, batavia, oakleaf lettuce, etc;
- stemmed - a kind of asparagus salad;
- headed is a type of lettuce with buttery and crunchy leaves; these include: iceberg, senator, major, dude and other varieties of lettuce;
- semi-headed, they are also disruptive - the peculiarity of the lettuce is that the outer leaves are cut off, and the young ones are left for further ripening; semi-headed varieties include: canyon, gascony and other types of lettuce;
- romaine, or Roman – the most common varieties of Roman lettuce are belongings, dandy, roger, etc.
How to properly sow seeds
The planting of lettuce seeds depends on several important factors. Firstly, when sowing seeds in open ground, it is important to take into account the temperature of the soil - it should warm up well, and also contain the nutrients necessary for good growth and development of the plant. Therefore, sowing lettuce seeds is recommended not earlier than the end of April. The quality of planting material also depends on the yield - for sowing lettuce, it is better to use seeds with high germination from proven breeders.
Also, when choosing seeds, it is important to consider the timing of plant maturation:
- if you want to harvest in the summer-autumn, then the seeds must be sown in early May and until mid-July;
- and to enjoy lettuce leaves during the cold season (winter), sow the seeds in containers or pots in early fall.
